How to play

Rules

Build the quickest route from the departure station to the arrival station. Each available date has five puzzles, worth up to 100 points each.

Build your route

  1. Choose a line from the departure station.
  2. Pick a direction and the stop where you want to get off.
  3. Change lines or use a walking connection when one is available.
  4. Keep going until you reach the arrival station.

You can reset an unfinished route. If you give up, the game shows the fastest route and gives you 0 points for that puzzle.

How time works

Your total includes time on the train, estimated waits, and the time needed to change stations or lines. These numbers come from the game's fixed timetable data and timing model. They are not live travel estimates.

Where multiple named services can make the same complete ride, the game may combine their frequencies and model taking the first suitable train.

City-specific connections

Paris: station equivalences, walking links, and transfer times follow the saved GTFS network and the game's mode-specific fallback rules.

London: separate TfL platform records in one hub count as the same departure or arrival station. A mid-route change between those records still costs the displayed interchange time. Routes use saved structural branches rather than live stopping patterns or service changes.

Chicago: playable stops are CTA parent stations. Platform and direction records remain in source processing, while transfers occur at the shared parent station. No nearby stations are linked merely by distance.

Washington: platform and direction records collapse through WMATA parent stations. Farragut Crossing is the only modeled walk between distinct stations; it uses five minutes. No proximity-only links are added.

Boston: platforms collapse only through explicit MBTA parent stations. Park Street–Downtown Crossing is a five-minute Winter Street Concourse walk; no other proximity-only links are added.

Berlin: Spandau–Rathaus Spandau, Charlottenburg–Wilmersdorfer Straße, Messe Nord/ZOB–Kaiserdamm, and Yorckstraße (Großgörschenstraße)–Yorckstraße are modeled as five-minute walks. Changes within the same station, including U-Bahn/S-Bahn interchanges, use three minutes.

Madrid: platforms collapse only through explicit CRTM parent stations. Required changes within lines 7, 9, and 10 count as a three-minute interchange plus a new wait; no proximity links are invented.

New York City: platforms collapse through the MTA's official station-complex definitions. Positive GTFS transfer times apply where supplied; other changes use a three-minute fallback.

Scoring

You get 100 points when your modeled journey time matches the stored fastest time. Otherwise, the score drops based on the extra time in minutes and as a percentage of the fastest time. The particular branch or service you choose is included in that time.

Score = 100 − minutes slower − 0.8 × percentage slower

This gives more weight to how much slower the route is proportionally, making scores more comparable across journeys of different lengths. If you reach the destination, you score between 10 and 99 unless your time matches the fastest time. Giving up scores 0. After five puzzles, the game adds everything together for a score out of 500.
